DCI Issues Arrest Warrant for Influencer Francis Gaitho Over Cybercrime Allegations

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a warrant for the arrest of Francis Gaitho, a prominent social media influencer and political commentator, citing multiple allegations of cybercrime.

In a statement released on Thursday via its official X account, the DCI accused Gaitho of disseminating personal information about a senior public officer and publishing false information. The agency further revealed that Gaitho failed to appear in court on December 4, 2024, leading the Milimani Law Courts to issue the arrest warrant.

“The suspect had been charged with the offence of publishing false information in violation of Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (Case No. CR E738/24),” the DCI stated.

Allegations of Cyber Harassment

The DCI alleges that Gaitho faces multiple counts of cyber harassment related to posts on his X handle, @FGaitho237. In one instance, he allegedly disparaged senior government officials, while other posts reportedly contained false information about killings and missing persons in Githurai and Rongai. These posts, according to detectives, incited public unrest and protests.

Last year, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) informed the court that Gaitho intentionally published false information about an innocent Kenyan regarding the Kware killings, causing fear and potential harm to the individual’s property.

DCI Seeks Public Assistance

The DCI has called on members of the public to assist in locating Gaitho, urging anyone with information to contact their toll-free hotline or report to the nearest police station.

“Wanted Francis Ng’ang’a Gaitho is wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for various criminal activities,” the statement read.

Gaitho Defends Himself

In response, Gaitho has denied the allegations and confirmed that he will present himself at the DCI headquarters on Monday, January 7. “I’m not a criminal. I’m not a murderer. I’m not a capital offender. I just tweet. Freedom of speech is a constitutional entitlement, and I exercise it to the best of my ability,” he stated.

Gaitho, known for his vocal criticism of corruption in government, has amassed a significant following on social media. His supporters argue that his legal troubles are politically motivated attempts to silence dissent.

Background and Previous Arrest

This is not the first time Gaitho has faced legal challenges. In October 2024, he was arrested but later released without charges. The influencer’s case continues to draw public attention, with many awaiting the outcome of the DPP’s review of the pending files.

As investigations proceed, the DCI emphasized its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice is served.
